Library Plans Art Workshops
Lancaster Public Library received state arts funding support through a grant from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, a state agency funded by the commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency. The $689 grant will fund art workshops for the public. Each workshop, led by local artist Schirlyn Kamara Sabur, will start with storytelling and discussions about a master artist and his or her work to further enhance the learning process.
The following free workshops are scheduled at the library.
Junior art workshops are planned for Saturdays, Jan. 25 and Feb. 1 and 8, from 10 a.m. to noon for children ages 5 to 7 and from 1 to 3 p.m. for children ages 8 to 10. Participants will discover contemporary artists, create paper mache artwork and learn how to paint with watercolors. Readers may register online at www.lpl-juniorart.eventbrite.com.
Teen and adult art workshops will be held on Saturdays, Feb. 22 and March 1 and 8 from 10 a.m. to noon for people ages 11 to 16 and from 1 to 3 p.m. for people age 17 and up. Participants will discover contemporary artists, create paper mache artwork and learn how to paint with watercolors. Individuals may register online at www.lpl-artworkshops.eventbrite.com.
A teen oil painting workshop will be held on Saturday, Feb. 15, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for teens ages 14 to 17. The class is based on the approaches and techniques used by today's leading oil landscape painters. The underlying objective is to simplify the landscape painting process into a series of understandable steps and techniques, making it possible for learners at all levels to complete a painting in one class period. Students will create an 18-by-24-inch canvas painting. The primary teaching approach will be individually tailored discussions at each artist's easel as he or she works. The workshop will start with presentations and discussions about master artists to further enhance the learning process. Readers may register online at www.lpl-teenoilworkshop.eventbrite.com.
Sabur is a self-taught artist and a Bob Ross Certified Instructor. She has exhibited her art at the Crispus Attucks Community Center and the Landis Woods Art Show, and she has done art demonstrations at local churches.
